PACE, Douglas Nelson, of Richmond, devoted husband, father, father-in-law, brother-in-law and grandfather, peacefully passed away Thursday, June 15, 2017, at the age of 84. Douglas was born in Henrico, Va., on January 24, 1933, into the family of the late Charles and Flossie Pace, and lived his early childhood in Goochland before moving to Chesterfield, where he lived out his life. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Gloria Smith Pace; and blessed children, Roslyn (Joe) Oliveri, Vicki (Jeff) Gaffney, Jason Pace and Alison (Jim) Byerly; also his fun-loving grandchildren, Neal and Anne-Paige Bass; Casey, Draden and Sawyer Gaffney; Sarah, Drew and Winston Pace and Chewy Byerly; and caring brother-in-law Danny (Dianne) Smith.

Douglas graduated from John Marshall High School and was Captain of Company "B" Cadet Corps. He married his high school sweetheart, Gloria, on March 15, 1952, at Bainbridge Baptist Church. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army and subsequently entered his dedicated career as a Hospital Administrator at Grace, Westbrook, Retreat and Stuart Circle Hospitals. He received a B.S. degree in Health Care Management from VCU Medical College of Virginia.

His many hours of volunteer services included President of Chesterfield Ruritan Club and Crestwood Farms Homeowner Association, Moose Lodge, Treasurer of the Virginia Blood Bank and Deacon at Huguenot Road Baptist Church and River Road Church, Baptist.

He enjoyed time with his friends and family playing handball at the Richmond YMCA, sailing on the Chesapeake Bay on the "Gloria," shooting pool at home and ballroom dancing with the love of his life at The Dance Space studio. Douglas will be fondly remembered for his steadfast, selfless, fairness and ever-present love and wisdom. The family wishes to thank all who helped with Douglas' care, especially the McNeers, William Stanley, Always There Companion Care Services, AseraCare and staff at The Memory Center Richmond.

Douglas' Celebration of Life Memorial Service is Wednesday, June 21, 2017, 11 a.m., The River Road Church, Baptist, 8000 River Rd., Richmond, Va., with a reception following. Preceding the memorial service, will be the graveside service, 10 a.m. in Westhampton Memorial Park, 10000 Patterson Ave., Richmond. Family and friends welcome.
